Tips For Moving With Your Dog From Our Storage Experts

Kim P. and her pup Hamilton reminds us, “Always have familiar items with you at all times during the move (their bed, toy, blanket and even a piece of clothing that has their owners smell on it). Dogs love music and it’s been known to calm them when in a car or moving van. Don’t worry if your dog does not eat on the trip, they are just nervous and eating doesn’t help and always be careful to not give too much water after a trip as it can upset their stomach. Remember a little goes a long way.” Kim also reminded us, “There’s always medication the vet can prescribe.”
Our surfer Property Manager, John A. in Cocoa Beach, FL suggest, “When traveling with a dog like Giuseppe (pictured above), it’s important to keep him comfortable in the car, like in a hot dog bed. Make sure not to forget his surfboard and (if you’re going surfing) always be sure that all the sand is off the dog after surfing. Have your dogs favorite ball pit (or toys) around.”

Jennifer G, Property Manager at our store in Ponce, PR shared a photo of herself and four legged son Gizmo with some great suggestions, “Any advice to move with a pet would be to have their water and food at hand. Do not leave your favorite toy and provide the greatest security. If you are going to travel by plane, a veterinarian will see you before the trip.”

Terri F., Co-Manager in North Port, FL and her 11 year old Toby have been through multiple moves and her suggestion is to use a belly band when introducing your dog to a new place. She also said Toby can get into a bit of trouble when learning a new place, “he [Toby] tends to pee inside when he notices something is out of the norm.”

Rosa R. Property Manager in Toa Baja, PR indroduced us to her pup and son with great suggestions, “This is my dog Candy playing with my son Eddiel. My recommendations are: Keep your old routines, do not introduce any new gears for now, lots of loving, treats, their favorite toys and familiar things you share, be patient and spend time playing.”

Sandra S. Training Manager, said when asked about moving with her pups shared with us, “I have 6 dogs and I take great care of them. When traveling with one of them I make sure that my husband drives the car and I will be aware of them during the trip so that they feel more calm. I also bring him his play bone and blanket.”

Ginger M. Property Manager in The Villages, FL said, “I don’t have a dog but a friend shared when he moved to a new place he walks his dog on a leash in once the movers have left so they can become accustomed to their surroundings.” Pictured above is Channel, Sandra S.’s pup.
Greg F., Training Manager, shared a picture of his pup Sue Ellen and the advice that, “Sue Ellen is quiet the busy body and a very anxious pup! My suggestion is not to crate your dog while packing. Keeping their routine as normal as possible is important and helps them feel more at ease when their home is changing. When it comes time to move the big stuff we always put Sue in her crate with her favorite blanket which helps to ease her anxiety.”
